How High Phenolic Extra Virgin Olive Oil can help you fight Aging & Oxidative Stress



Entropy is the process by which order descends into chaos. It is the same rule by which we age. For some reason not yet explained, things don’t stay as they are but naturally come apart. We do know how aging happens. But do we know that we age from premature aging (sun, lifestyle choices, etc) 70% rather than chonic aging?

How do we age? In youth, as we are growing especially, the cells of our tissue (connective tissue, nerve tissue, muscle tissue, and epithelial tissue) are perfectly able to replicate themselves. They do so by a process of the cells splitting. As the cells age, they become larger, more full of waste lipids, and less able to divide and multiply. The connective tissue stiffens, making the organs, blood vessels and airways more rigid. It makes it harder for the exchange of nutrients to take place through the cell walls, as well as the removal of CO2. After the age of 30, around 1% (depending on genes and lifestyle) of your organ function is lost per year, especially in the heart, lungs, kidneys and skin.

How does consuming High Phenolic Extra Virgin Olive Oil support our organism in the preservation of healthy cells? In essence, the antioxidants present in the Oleocanthal (read a dedicated article here) fight the “free radicals” which cause cell deterioration.

"Antioxidant" is a general term for any compound that can counteract unstable molecules called free radicals that damage DNA, cell membranes, and other parts of cells. Because free radicals lack a full complement of electrons, they steal electrons from other molecules (like the cell membranes) and damage those molecules in the process. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by giving up some of their own electrons. In making this sacrifice, they act as a natural "off" switch for the free radicals. This helps break a chain reaction that can affect other molecules in the cell and other cells in the body. Some free-radical oxidation activity is good and fundamental to the body’s wellbeing. It is too much of this ‘oxidative stress’ that causes damage to fatty tissue, DNA and proteins, which over time, causes diseases such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, inflammation, high blood pressure, heart disease, and neurodegenerative diseases as well as cancers. Oleocanthal is such a highly charged antioxidant, found almost exclusively in Extra Virgin Olive Oil, making it one of the healthiest fats on the planet, thanks to the profile of monounsaturated fatty acids which protects it from oxidation. Other oils, furthermore, are made of poly-saturated fatty acids which are highly prone to oxidation. All this is to say that the consumption of Extra Virgin Olive Oil can fundamentally alter the physiology of mesenchymal stem cells, keeping them elastic and thus, preventing the visibility of aging on the skin.

A 2012 study surveying 1,264 women and 1,665 men between the ages of 45 and 60 consuming monounsaturated fatty acids, found lower rates of severe photoaging for both sexes. Note that the same results were not found when the monounsaturated fat came from animal products, but rather from Extra Virgin Olive Oils. This is why it is recommended by the European Food Safety Authority that we consume 20gr or four tablespoons of High Phenolic Extra Virgin Olive Oil per day. Studies are ongoing, with investigations into the healing benefits of squalene from Extra Virgin Olive Oil being carried out at the University of Jaen. How can we use Extra Virgin Olive Oil to fight the signs of aging? Here are some of our favorite remedies:

  • Massage a few drops of High Phenolic Extra Virgin Olive Oil into your face x 3 times per week. You can either sleep with it or dab it off with paper before applying night cream.

  • Try using it as a full body moisturizer, or as an after-sun treatment.

  • Apply it as a hair mask, cover it with a hot towel and leave it in for approx 2h. The secret for removing the oil from the hair after the treatment is complete is to wash with shampoo before pouring on the water, not after.

  • You can also use it to moisturize just the tips of the hair.

  • Always check the ingredients of the natural cosmetics that you buy. Choose those that contain Extra Virgin Olive Oil, rather than refined olive oil. Refined olive oil lacks antioxidants.

  • Don’t forget to consume fresh, raw high phenolic olive oil every day. That is the best way to enjoy all its benefits. Sprinkle everything you eat. From breakfast dishes (pancakes, yogurt, fruit salads, oatmeal, eggs, etc) to main dishes and desserts!
